Subjects: Polls; 2010 election

E&OE…

STEVE VIZARD    News polls are suggesting that voters are getting behind new PM JGill and her tough stance on asylum seekers. An election could be held as early as Thursday and held as early as next month. The polls suggesting the ALP would win if an election were held today. Well the Galaxy Poll of 1,009 voters taken on the weekend found Labor’s primary vote has dropped two points to 39 percent in the first fortnight since Ms Gillard toppled KRudd as PM. But funnily enough the votes have almost gone directly to the Greens who are up two points to 14 percent. The Coalition votes aren’t changed at 42 percent. It is only a poll but this in essence means that if a vote was taken today PM JGill is in an election winning position with Galaxy saying a preference similar to the 2007 election would result in a two-party preferred lead for the ALP of 52 percent to Coalition’s 48 percent.

JULIE BISHOP    She is being very tricky.  Everyone knows that she made an announcement for her plan for a reprocessing centre in East Timor and the depth of the diplomatic blunder can be gauged by the fact that Ms Gillard is now trying to back off from her announcement and trying to suggest that she didn’t mean East Timor, when she clearly did.

Subjects: Labor’s border protection policy

E&OE…

HOWARD SATTLER    The Pacific Solution of course was John Howard’s baby and someone who worked with him is Julie Bishop, Deputy Opposition Leader these days. Hi Julie.

JULIE BISHOP    Good afternoon Howard.

HOWARD SATTLER    Is this the Pacific Solution re-branded?

JULIE BISHOP    Well Howard no one could make any sense of what Chris Evans claims is now meant to be Labor policy. It sounded like just more talk from the Kevin Rudd school of spin.

Subjects: Labor’s border protection policy announcement; Future Directions International Indian Ocean Dialogue.

E&OE…

JOURNALIST    We might begin, because it is the topic of the day, with the new policy that we’ve seen launched in Canberra today. Have you had a chance to hear much about it so far?

JULIE BISHOP    Yes I heard the policy. Ms Gillard has practised the art of spin for she made an announcement that she’s “talking” to people. Well that is not good enough, that is not a border protection policy.
