JULIE BISHOP    I am here in Townsville this morning with Ewen Jones, the LNP candidate for the seat of Herbert. It is important that we are out and about in the community in Northern Queensland to hear the concerns of people who feel dudded by the Rudd-and-Gillard or the Rudd-now-Gillard Government over a whole range of issues from health to small business to the question of asylum seekers. We are meeting with community people today, with businesses to hear their concerns and to get feedback from them.

JOURNALIST    A lot of candidates have visited Mackay lately, how crucial is the Dawson seat?

JULIE BISHOP    The whole state of Queensland is very important in this election and obviously we want to win the seat of Dawson. We’ve got a great candidate in George Christensen. He’s a local person, understands local issues and the concerns of local people and so it is an important seat for us to win.

MARIUS BENSON    Julie Bishop, there are a lot of issue on the boil in both national politics and in foreign affairs. Can I begin by asking you about Fiji which has expelled Australia’s Acting High Commissioner, what are your thoughts on that?

JULIE BISHOP    This is yet another sign that the regime in Fiji has no interest in providing stable or democratic government in that country. It is sad for the Fijian people who are being denied the right to vote for a government of their choice.

JULIE BISHOP    Well this is more disturbing evidence that the regime in Fiji has no interest in providing stable and democratic government. It is sad for the Fijian people because they are being denied the right to vote for a government of their choice.
