British election

The Deputy Leader of the Opposition Julie Bishop today congratulated the leaders of the new British Coalition Government, David Cameron and Nick Clegg.

Ms Bishop said it is pleasing to see the Conservative Party return to Government after 13 years in Opposition.

“Britain is facing a range of daunting challenges and I wish Prime Minister Cameron every success in the future,” she said.

“The Conservative Party ran an impressive campaign to win a significant number of seats from the Labour party.

“While Coalitions are not a common feature in British politics, the experience in Australia with the Liberal and National Parties shows that Coalition Governments can work well over many decades.”
